Learn Together Cymru’s Reading with Dogs project was really pleased to welcome Izzy to the pack before the summer break. Izzy, along with her owner, volunteer Jenni Aazem, has settled in very well in Ysgol Y Bynea in Llanelli and have proved quite the hit with children and staff alike.
Reading with Dogs is a collaboration between Learn Together Cymru and Carmathenshire Therapy Dogs which aims to improve children’s confidence and develop their literacy by reading to a dog. The dog provides a calming effect for children who may be a little reluctant to read, and a pair of non-judgemental doggie ears to listen with.
In addition to our usual recruitment process with volunteers, potential dogs must have an assessment by a vet to ensure they are of a suitable temperament.
The dogs seem to enjoy the experience as much as the children, and Izzy now has her own business card with a book in the pipeline!
If you live in Carmarthenshire and think your dog may be suitable to join Reading with Dogs please do get in touch – we would love to see the pack grow!
